Last checked: November 2, 2026. Thai rules change often, so always confirm with the official source before you travel or apply.
Put the words Thailand visa crackdown in a headline and worried readers arrive quickly. The old post made exactly that complaint: a rumour could become a story, followed by an offer to solve the supposed problem for a fee. I still think a reader deserves a better answer. Check the official rule, distinguish it from a proposal and be cautious about anyone selling certainty.
Thailand visa crackdown: what is the actual change?
Start with the date and the authority. Does the post link to an immigration notice or a recent embassy explanation? Does it identify the group affected, or does it say “all foreigners” without evidence? A traveller’s account at one counter may be worth reading, but it does not by itself establish a nationwide rule. Equally, the absence of a headline does not guarantee that your own application meets the conditions.
In 2026 Thailand introduced a revised visa-exemption framework with different arrangements by nationality. That is a verifiable policy change, not a reason to claim that every visitor faces a new ban. Check your own passport and purpose against current Thai government guidance. Keep a record of your permitted-stay date and do not confuse it with the expiry date of a visa sticker.
Repeated entries and long stays
Immigration officers can examine a traveller’s circumstances, and repeated short entries may receive scrutiny. Do not assume that a pattern which worked for someone else guarantees your next entry. Carry truthful information about your plans and understand the conditions of the entry route you use. I would be especially cautious about an adviser who promises that a border trip is a substitute for the correct long-stay permission.
The Thailand–Cambodia land crossings were reported closed in current Canadian travel advice checked in November 2026. Do not plan a land run across that border based on an old itinerary. Conditions can change, so check official advice for the day and route. An air ticket or a booking with an agent does not override a closed crossing.
Education visas are for genuine study
The old post questioned arrangements in which a person enrolled on paper but did not attend lessons. I would avoid repeating its allegations about any named school or official. The practical point remains: choose a legitimate programme you intend to attend, understand the attendance and documentation requirements and check what the school will provide. Do not rely on a promise that you can buy a visa without studying.
A school can help with paperwork, but an authority decides the application. Ask about its registration, timetable, fees and refund policy. If the programme closes or your circumstances change, seek advice promptly. Working or running a business raises separate legal questions; a class enrolment is not a general work permit.
Ask for the right long-stay route
Thailand has different categories for family, retirement, study, employment and other purposes. Eligibility and evidence vary. Use the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ official e-Visa information and consult the appropriate embassy or immigration office. Do not treat an old checklist as a promise.
Extensions are another process. Our guide to extensions and reporting explains why a 90-day address report does not extend permission to stay. For an appointment, verify the correct office rather than relying on a dated address; see our Bangkok immigration office guide.
When a headline makes you nervous
Save the link, check when it was written and look for the original notice. Write down the question that actually concerns you: “Can I apply for this category with these documents?” is more useful than “Are visas being cracked down on?” If your permission is close to expiring, contact the responsible authority promptly or obtain qualified advice. A stranger in a discussion group cannot see the full record in your passport.
People do need clear rules and fair treatment. They do not need invented emergencies. A careful check may lead you to change plans, but the change should be based on your circumstances and a current source.
Do not pay for an answer you can check
An immigration adviser may be useful when your case is complicated, but ask for a written description of the work and the amount charged. Which part is an official application fee? Which part pays the adviser? Will the person review your documents, attend an appointment or simply provide a form you could obtain yourself? A reputable professional should be able to explain the service without claiming to control an immigration officer.
Keep your own copies of the passport pages, submission and payment confirmation. If you submit online, check whether the status is merely submitted, under review or approved. Those are different stages. If a representative uses their own email address for all notifications, agree on how you will receive copies and what happens if you later change advisers.
When two official explanations appear to conflict, do not average them into a new rule. Check their dates, the nationality and the entry route each discusses, and ask the authority responsible for your case. A change announced by a cabinet and a rule that has actually taken effect may also be at different stages. Keep the reply with your records and make plans that allow time for an application to be refused or delayed.
I understand why a person with family, work and a home here feels anxious when a deadline approaches. That makes a calm, documented answer more valuable. Do not hand over your passport or savings because a seller says you must decide in the next hour.
FAQ
Does a viral post prove that all visa runs are banned?
No. Check the actual rule, nationality and route with official sources. Repeated entries can still be scrutinised.
Can I cross into Cambodia by land for a quick return?
Current travel advice checked in November 2026 reported the land crossings closed. Check official updates before any trip.
Does a 90-day report extend my stay?
No. Address reporting and extending permission to stay are separate processes.
Can a school guarantee an education visa?
No. An authority decides the application. Choose a genuine course and verify its documents and conditions.
