Driving Licence in Thailand: Documents, Dress and Test-Day Preparation. A PersonalThailand post from May 2008 described a woman arriving for a driving-licence test near Pattaya and being told to return in longer trousers. It was a personal experience at one office on one date. It does not establish that Thai law now requires women—but not men—to wear long trousers for every licence appointment. Avoid treating stories about a single examiner as nationwide legislation.
Why an old clothing warning is not enough
There is still an easy practical lesson: dress neatly and conservatively for an official appointment, and check the office’s current instructions before going. Comfortable closed shoes and clothing suitable for standing, completing tests and moving around a test area are sensible. Ask the office directly about any specific dress standard; do not turn a precaution into an invented legal rule.
Find the correct Department of Land Transport service
The Department of Land Transport (DLT) handles driving licence procedures in Thailand. The steps for first-time applicants, renewals, conversion from another country’s licence and particular licence categories are not identical. Before collecting paperwork, confirm which service you need and which DLT office serves your area. Do not assume a Pattaya anecdote will apply at a Bangkok, Chiang Mai or provincial office.
The DLT publishes official service information and licensing guides. Procedures, training formats, appointment systems and acceptance of foreign documents may change. Use the current DLT service portal rather than relying on an agent’s old price sheet. If information on a third-party website conflicts with a current DLT notice, seek clarification directly from the department.
Organise identity and residence documents
Applicants should prepare identification documents and any evidence the applicable licence process requires. For a foreign applicant, this can include a passport, evidence of a lawful stay, proof of address or residence and an existing licence when applying for a conversion or a particular category. The exact list is sensitive to immigration status and service type; it is not safe to provide one universal list for every applicant.
As one clearly limited example, Thailand’s Board of Investment explains proof-of-residence procedures for long-term resident (LTR) visa holders seeking driving licences. That guidance refers to a certificate from an embassy or relevant immigration service and gives details about supporting documents. It is explicitly about LTR holders, so other applicants should ask their DLT office for its own current requirements.
What happens on test day
Allow extra time for document checks and possible queues. Depending on the licence procedure, you may be asked to attend an information session, complete a vision or reaction assessment, take a theory test, or demonstrate driving skills. Not every applicant goes through all these activities, and requirements may depend on whether you already hold a valid recognised licence.
Bring any appointment confirmation, the original documents required by your office and copies only where requested. Keep a simple folder so you can quickly find passport pages, photographs or certificates if they are on the official list. Never pay an unofficial person who promises a valid licence without the required process. Confirm the accepted fee and payment channel at the DLT office.
Clothing, safety and practical comfort
Choose clean, respectful clothing rather than beachwear. For any driving component, dress so clothing cannot catch on pedals, controls or a motorcycle. Sturdy, secure footwear is more practical than loose flip-flops. A motorcycle applicant should also ask what helmet and protective equipment are required for the test and whether personal equipment must be brought.
The right question is not “Are shorts illegal for every woman?” but “What is this office requiring for my appointment today?” If a staff member requests a change, ask politely which rule or test-safety requirement applies and whether you can reschedule without losing your application. A friend’s experience sixteen or eighteen years ago cannot guarantee the answer.
After your licence is issued
Check your personal details, licence category, validity period and any restrictions before leaving. Keep track of the expiry date and do not assume a motorcycle entitlement follows automatically from a car licence, or vice versa. Also understand that holding a licence does not replace the need for appropriate insurance or vehicle registration.
If you plan to drive abroad, different rules apply to international driving permits and recognition of a Thai licence in another country. Consult the DLT and the destination authority. A careful document check and realistic test-day planning are more useful than a dramatic old story about one pair of shorts.
Quick checklist
- Confirm the correct licence category and DLT office.
- Check your exact documents and appointment rules in advance.
- Dress appropriately for both administration and any practical tests.
- Verify the issue date, category and expiry on the finished licence.
Official information and further reading
Official sources are useful starting points, but check their issue dates and whether they cover your exact situation before acting.
