Helping a brother out in Thailand
Around 22.00 in the evening few days ago I got an email from a desperate mother from the United States. Her son was caught fighting in some province in south of Thailand and she did not know what to do. The American Embassy did not want to help and the numbers she called was just Thai people.
I send her a message back and told her that nobody working at this hour in Thailand and that nothing will happen in the police station this late at night, everybody is looked in and probably sleeping. She was panicking because the son’s mobile phone was off and I tried it but no answer. She told me the son had got into a fight with some local mafia in south Thailand and guns had been drawn from the other side.
I called her to American and talked with her for a while and I said I can round up some lawyer that can call the police in charge just to make sure your son is ok and that the case is ok. If the police know someone from Bangkok is looking into the case they might not do something stupid.
I round up some lawyers I knew and they agreed to call and check even if it was now well over 23.00 in Thailand. After a while they got the info that the case was a minor case and they the son was ok and no problem. He would be taken care of by a local lawyer in the morning.
I never asked for any advance payment but she told me time after time that she would and could pay for the lawyer’s time. To get a Thai lawyer to work that late at night is a big personal favor and I have a big heart and I told him she will give him some money.
I sent her a Pay Pal request and I was planning to go down to the law office with some candy and money the next morning. Now a few days later she did not send any money, no email to thank me, no phone call to thank me just dead silence.
It is not about the money but favors were asked and money was promised and now I am in debt to the lawyer for some favor that’s not even about me.
This is the last time I help a brother out in Thailand
