Are hotel discounts disappearing in Thailand? Not as a general rule. A claim made during one tourism season cannot explain what every hotel is charging today. Room prices vary by destination, weather, holidays, occupancy and the conditions attached to a booking. More useful than searching for a supposed nationwide pricing policy is learning how to compare the real cost of a hotel stay.
Why the same Thai hotel can have very different prices
Accommodation is sold at different rates according to demand and product. A hotel can list one rate for a room with breakfast, another for a room-only booking and another for a reservation that cannot be cancelled. The cost of the same room may differ by weekday, a festival weekend, how early it is booked and how many rooms remain.
Season also matters. Thailand is not one uniform weather zone. Rainy periods in Bangkok and the Andaman coast do not exactly match those on the Gulf of Thailand. A beach property’s attractive price is less useful if a visitor expects a particular water activity that is unavailable or unsafe during the chosen month. Compare the weather and seasonal risks for the actual destination, not a generic label of ‘Thailand’s low season’.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand has described accommodation being often cheaper during rainy-season travel; it has not promised that every property will offer a discount on every date.
Compare the total stay, not the headline nightly rate
Before deciding that one offer is cheaper, put both options on the same basis:
- Dates and occupancy: same check-in, check-out and number of adults or children.
- Taxes and fees: compare the final amount shown before payment, not just the search-result headline.
- Meals: is breakfast included, and what does it cost otherwise?
- Cancellation: can you change dates or get a refund, and by what deadline?
- Location: estimate travel time and transport costs to the places you actually plan to visit.
- Room type: check bed arrangement, air-conditioning, elevator access and any advertised view.
- Payment and deposit: confirm whether a deposit or security hold applies and how it is returned.
For a family staying several nights, these details can matter more than a small difference in the nightly room rate.
Booking direct versus using a travel platform
It is reasonable to compare a hotel’s official website with reputable booking platforms. Some offers include member benefits; others bundle transfers or breakfast. A direct booking may make it easier to discuss special requests, while a platform may provide a familiar payment and reservation record. Neither channel is guaranteed to be cheapest in all circumstances.
If contacting a smaller hotel directly, ask for a written quote that states the room type, dates, inclusions, cancellation policy and final price. Be wary of demands to transfer money unexpectedly to a new account or communicate only through an unrelated messaging contact. Confirm a suspicious payment instruction through a contact method you obtained independently from the property.
When a lower price can cost more
A deeply discounted non-refundable room can be a sensible choice for fixed plans. It can also be a poor bargain if you are waiting for a flight connection, dealing with uncertain dates or travelling during a period when weather may disrupt transport. Compare the value of flexibility with the cash saving.
Likewise, a hotel well outside the centre may be attractive on paper but require several costly taxi journeys. Calculate the cost of the whole trip rather than treating the room as a standalone purchase.
Planning by season without making weather promises
The Andaman coast, including Phuket, often has different sea and rain conditions from Samui and the Gulf coast. Coastal safety varies even within the same month. If beaches are central to the holiday, consult forecasts, flag warnings and local operators close to your travel date. Do not assume that a cheaper room means swimming is safe, or that a high-season booking guarantees perfect weather.
Thailand’s official tourism portal offers general seasonal information, and the UK government’s travel advice warns that heavy rainfall can disrupt transport. Those are more reliable planning inputs than a decades-old assertion about where hotels should set their rates.
A quick hotel comparison method
- Pick two or three properties that meet your location and accessibility needs.
- Compare prices for precisely the same dates and occupancy.
- Record final cost, meals, payment conditions and cancellation rules.
- Check recent guest feedback for recurring practical concerns, not just the numerical rating.
- Confirm transport to the airport or bus station, especially for very early departures.
- Keep your written confirmation after payment.
Where did the ‘no more discounts’ idea come from?
The original version of this post, dated January 2010, criticised an alleged tourism-sector proposal about reducing hotel discounts. It also made unsupported broad claims about pricing according to nationality. This updated article does not treat those comments as a current Thai government policy or describe them as standard hotel practice.
Discounts still need to be judged one reservation at a time. Check current conditions, avoid assumptions about nationalities or seasons, and choose the offer that works for your actual trip.

Well Pattaya has it nice spots i go back and forward but i do not want to mingle with the local beer people.
I have lived in Thailand for three years.
In the beginning, when I was ignorant, it was a bliss and I liked everything about it.
But then when you learn you way around then I (everyone who stay´s here) learns that it´s all on the surface.
The corruption and greed is overwhelming and so is the ignorance of all classes.
I´m leaving Thailand for Cambodia with no sadness except for the normal hard working Thais who are taken for a ride everyday all year around.
Most of the foreigners in a place like Pattaya deserve what they get there and they get separated from their money fairly quick and easy. But then again they don´t have a lot to start with and their only demand is sexual freedom and drinking whenever.
