Some New Years tourist that was overcharged for food around Thailand has actually taken the complaint to the Police. Some were charged 45 000 THB for a dish that normally should cost maybe 5000 THB. Others complaint that the restaurant have two different menus and that the Thai people eating got away with much cheaper food even if they ate the same dishes.
The government has in a surprise move announced a crack down on overprice food (Thailand is the mother of all crack downs). Thailand is well known for the overpricing for Tourist and the government has for more then 15 years supported it. Many government owned companies like the National Parks and other places have a clear double price policy. While the Thai people visiting the park pays 40 THB the tourists (even if they lived here for 10 years and pay tax) pays 400 THB. The subject has been the subject in the reader’s opinion in the English speaking magazine for over 15 years here and the government has not done anything about it.
The government is not going to do anything about it as usual It is part of Thailand way to make money. Overprice the tourist and make as much money they can from the people come first time to Thailand and do not know how to save money.
