Motorbike driving in Pattaya

So I have driven around in Pattaya now for about two weeks time and this is my short assessment of the situation.

Last night it was me and five other foreigners and we all had helmets but the entire Thais riders(around 100 of them) maybe one used motorbike helmet. Are Thai better drivers or do they know that the police are not out now anyway? I do not use a helmet because of the police I use it because I do not know like to have a broken skull any day soon.

A Thai motorbike driver can come out from everywhere and from nowhere and they have no real rules they just peak out when they want. So you have to check for traffic from all directions and never for once second relax because they do.

Bling Bling

Thai drivers do not use blinkers when they want to turn somewhere. This is the same for cars or motorbike drivers not only motorbikes. So you really have no idea where the person in front of you is going to turn or if he is going to turn at all.

Red Plate is cool

Having a red plate is considered cool in Thailand and nobody really care if you cannot use them after 18.00 at night. Many Thais drive around with a red place for a very long time just because they think people think they just bought the car or motorbike.

The zebra is there for people to find the body parts more easily when a car hit you and nothing else.

Yellow means green and red can also means green if no police is there.

After midnight no traffic rules apply and all one way streets become all the way streets.

I feel very silly wearing a helmet after midnight when 99 percentages does not use it.

All the Arabs have big scooters and Russians have big speed bikes.

Even if talking in the mobile phone while driving is forbidden these things are still ok

  • Drive and eat hot dogs
  • Drive and smoke
  • Drive and drink
  • Drive and talk with other people on other motorbikes in a big gang
  • Drive with two dogs on your motorbike
  • Drive and eat noodles
  • Drive and hold your baby
  • Riding 3-5 people on the motorbike
  • Bring home two month off food supply on one motorbike

And if you seen them doing anything else let us know!
