Free Michael Smith from Thai prison

Free Michael Smith from Thai prison

Thailand should really step there human rights record. How Thai government can defends their human rights status and in the same time putting innocent people in same prison as guilty once. Thailand does not have a separate holding prison for innocent people but they are put with the rest of the worst criminals. If you do not have money to post bail and that is the horrible fact for most Thai people you will be going to prison for 1 – 3 years before your trial.

This is also the case with the merchant of death and now also a man called Michael Smith, a 43-year-old from Briton. UAE wants him back to the face charges of embezzlement but Thailand does not have treaty with the UAE. That should have been the end of the story but now the Thai court put Michael Smith in a prison with 20 000 others of Thailand’s worst criminals.
UAE also have a very bad human rights record much worse than Thailand and foreign labor is called modern slavery. You cannot leave or enter the country if you want to work without the approval of your sponsor. BBC had a documentary about people fleeing UAE by boat because the boss blamed them for the economical problems this last year.
I have not looked into the case regarding his innocence’s or not but in Thai law he is innocent and there is no law to send him back to UAE so he should be free and reunited with his Thai wife.

From Wikipedia

Many expatriate workers, mostly of South Asian origin, have after their arrival in the UAE been turned into debt-ridden de facto indentured servants.[53] Confiscation of passports, although illegal, occurs on a large scale, primarily of unskilled or semi-skilled employees.[54]

The UAE’s system of employment for non-citizens ties an employee to the employer and prevents him or her from seeking alternative employment without the expressed approval of the original employer. Also, non-payment of wages, cramped and unsanitary living conditions and poor safety practices are widespread and have been the subject of foreign media attention.
