The government is looking to hit one more nail in the coffin for big retailers mostly foreign owned like Tesco Lotus and Big C. They will leave up to the Ministry to decide next time a big retailer want to open a big supermarket. This off course paves the way for tea money and behind the scene handshakes. The supermarket themselves had asked for clear rules and not another messy law that depends on a personality of a Minister that year.
The law is to help all the small “mom and pop†shops around the country. You know the shops with no service mind at all were the food is old the products have dust on them and the price depends on the day and how much money you have. It is off course politics they will let the Thai big retailer expands when the foreign will have to be stopped. The biggest competitor to the “mom and pop†shops is not the big shops it is the 7/11 that pops up in every corner of Thailand. They are also a big cause why kids this days just eat American fast food.
